Tutorial 11 of 12
Light a concept with Render Desk
Intermediate 7 min
Render a Form Studio model with material finishes, soft shadows and diagnostic passes.
Open a concept in Form Studio, choose a camera, then select Render Desk. The desk takes a copy of the model and camera. Its finishes and lighting live in a separate recipe; the cabinet project and original solids stay editable. You can also open /app#render to try the Studio corner example.
Make the first preview
Choose Draft under Quality preset, keep Beauty selected, and select Render preview. The worker renders on this device, showing one completed sample at a time. Stop render keeps the latest completed preview available for PNG export.
Set the light azimuth and elevation to move the distant light. Shadow softness spreads its sampled directions. Ambient light fills shaded surfaces with a short-range occlusion estimate. Exposure changes the beauty pass in stops. Choose a solid and its Matte, Satin or Metal finish. Metal adds one reflection; it is a concept approximation.
The camera starts at the Form Studio view. Adjust its angles and view span, or use Fit visible model. Hidden solids are excluded. Changes clear the old preview so exported images always match the current settings.
Inspect the passes
- Beauty: display color with direct light, soft shadows, local occlusion and material finish.
- Base color: source color before lighting.
- Surface normals: world-space X/Y/Z directions mapped to RGB.
- Depth: normalized camera depth; nearer surfaces are brighter. This is not a distance map in millimetres.
- Light visibility: the fraction of sampled light directions visible to the surface, including its facing.
- Object IDs: deterministic display colors for the visible object order. This is not Cryptomatte; do not use antialiased colors as exact masks.
Choose a pass, render it, and download its PNG. For a transparent cutout enable Transparent background and disable Ground plane. The ground remains opaque when enabled.
Keep the work
Save a .kerfwise-render.json recipe containing the source model, camera, finishes and settings. Open it later or use the five recent recipes stored on this device. Undo/redo restores settings, but images must be rendered again. A fixed recipe, pass and sampling seed produces the same pixels.
Standard uses 640 × 480 at eight samples; Fine uses sixteen. Twice the samples means twice the pixel-sample work, with no promised render time. Use Render Sampling Budget to compare workloads. The 3D Scene and Render Pass Preview tool supplies small SVG previews through HTML, API and MCP.
Limits are 4096 visible triangles, 384000 pixels and six million pixel samples. Render Desk is an independent concept renderer inspired by MoonRay's render-output workflow; it does not execute MoonRay, import RDL/USD scenes or provide path tracing, glass, EXR or render-farm services.
