Room planner, quantities and IFC export
Intermediate 10 min
Draw walls by typing lengths and angles or by clicking, add doors and windows, read room areas, paint, tiles, daylight and heat load, check cabinet clearances and export IFC4.
The Room planner gives your cabinets a room. You draw walls on their centre lines, add doors and windows, and Kerfwise finds the rooms the walls enclose. For each room it lists areas, wall surfaces for paint, tiles, skirting, volume, a daylight estimate and a heat-load estimate. It also checks whether your cabinets collide with walls or door swings and whether there is enough space in front of them. The numbers come from the same engine as the kerfwise-room-quantities and kerfwise-ifc-export tools.
All results are approximate planning figures. They are not certified for building permits, energy certificates or the sizing of a heating system.
1. Open the planner
Choose Room planner in the bar above the plan, or Tools → Room planner (walls, rooms, quantities, IFC)…. A new project starts from the walls, windows and doors of your kitchen plan. To try a finished example, open New room plan… in the planner's toolbar and choose L-shaped flat with kitchen and bathroom.
The plan shows the walls with mitred corners, doors with their swing, windows, every room with its name and net area, and a dimension for every wall piece. Below it, the totals read Net room area (NRF) 33.7 m², Gross floor area (BGF) 45.83 m² and Construction area (KGF) 12.14 m².
2. Type walls
Choose New room plan… → Empty plan. Under Walls, keep Start X (mm) and Start Y (mm) at 0 and type into Steps:
5000<0 4000<270 5000<180 close
Each step is a length in millimetres and an angle: 0 points right, 90 up, 180 left and 270 down on the plan. @dx,dy steps are relative moves. close closes the loop. Set Thickness (mm) to 300 and press Add wall (or Enter in the steps field). The room appears with 17.39 m² net area.
To draw by mouse, press Draw by clicking and click the corners. Points snap to wall corners, onto the centre line of a wall you click on, and to a 50 mm grid. Press Enter to finish, Backspace to remove the last point or Escape to cancel. Walls that end on another wall form a T junction; walls that cross form an X junction, and each side becomes its own room.
Every wall has fields for name, thickness, height, U-value and Layers. Write layers like Plaster 15 0.87; Brick 240 0.58; Mineral wool 140 0.035: name, thickness in mm and thermal conductivity. The thickness becomes their sum and the U-value is calculated after EN ISO 6946.
3. Doors, windows and rooms
Open Doors and windows. Choose the Wall, the Segment, Type and the Offset from segment start (mm), then the size and sill height. Doors also have a Hinge side and Opens to (left or right of the segment direction). Press Add opening.
Under Room names and uses give each room a name, a use after DIN 277 (for example NUF 7 Other uses (sanitary rooms, cloakrooms) for a bathroom or VF Circulation area for a hall), a design temperature and whether its floor is tiled.
4. Read the quantities
Three tables follow the plan:
- Rooms and areas: net area, perimeter and volume per room, plus NRF, KGF and BGF.
- Finishes: gross and net wall area (openings deducted), ceiling, paint in litres, tiles and boxes, and skirting including waste.
- Daylight and heat load (approximate): window area, window-to-floor ratio, the BRE average daylight factor and the heat load from walls, windows, doors, floor, ceiling and ventilation.
Change tile size, paint coverage, temperatures and default U-values under Quantity settings.
5. Place your cabinets
Open Cabinets and furniture and press Place cabinets from the project. Every cabinet and appliance of the Kerfwise project appears as a box at its kitchen plan position. Furniture checks lists collisions with walls, door swings and other items, items rising above a window sill and the clear depth in front of each base unit (900 mm by default).
6. Preview and export
- 3-D preview opens the Render Desk with the walls cut around the openings, the slabs and the furniture. Closing it returns to the planner.
- Export IFC4 writes an IFC4 file and shows IFC validation of the last export, twelve checks from syntax to openings and quantities.
- Export DXF, Export SVG, Export quantities (CSV) and Export OBJ write the plan, the table and the 3-D model.
- Save room plan and Open room plan… keep a .kerfwise-room.json file. The plan is also saved inside your Kerfwise project.
The same room JSON works with the room quantities tool and the IFC tool through the API and MCP.
